Upper Stoney Creek · Hamilton

Thank you,
Ward 9.
Let’s get to work.

On October 26 you voted for the future. I am honoured to be your next City Councillor for Upper Stoney Creek.

Thank you to every neighbour who opened a door, planted a sign, made a call or cast a ballot. Thank you to my family, to the volunteers who gave up their evenings and weekends, and to the people who have done this job before me and stood behind this campaign.

Now the work starts. Lower taxes. Safer streets. Reliable roads. Fixing the GFL problem for good. I am here to serve everyone in Ward 9, whether you voted for me or not. My door is open.

The new council term begins November 15. Until then, reach me at info@votejonathan.ca.

Let’s move our community forward. Because better is possible.

Why I Ran

This is my home. These are my neighbours.

A fair opportunity for anyone willing to work hard.

I was raised by a single mother on a fixed income, right here in Upper Stoney Creek. This community gave me a shot. A fair opportunity to get my first job at 13, work full time through university, earn my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and build a business and a great career.

That same opportunity is gone for the kid going through now what I went through more than 15 years ago.

I have watched taxes climb more than 20 percent since 2022, while our current councillor voted for $92 million in spending, including $60 million to expedite bike lanes, the $27 million Red Hill inquiry, and a roughly $5 million overrun on tiny homes. There have been two shootings on my street in the past year, 15 metres from my home. I have heard neighbours say they no longer feel safe. I have sat with families who close their windows in July because of the landfill.

None of this has to be permanent. The fixes are real, and I have the plan and the experience to deliver them.

I did not run for a title. I ran to restore that promise. This is my home, these are my neighbours, and I know we can do better.

No matter who you are or where you live in Ward 9, I am here to serve you. I love this community, and I know we need to move forward as a city.

Let’s move our city forward.

Because better is possible.

Lower Taxes · Affordability

Lower taxes start with smarter spending.

Ward 9 families should be getting ahead, not just keeping up. That starts with a City Hall that respects your money. Lower tax increases come from finding the waste first, not from cutting the services families count on.

The Plan
Find the waste before asking for more. Review contracts, consultants, and procurement first.
Value, not cuts. Protect front-line services while pushing every tax dollar further.
Real accountability. Before City Hall asks you for more, it should account for what it already takes.
Grow the business tax base. Homeowners carry about 87 percent of the assessment in Hamilton. Bringing in more business investment spreads that load instead of leaning on the same families every year.
The pattern we can’t afford

The Auditor General’s January 2026 report found the Barton-Tiffany shelter jumped from $2.8 million to $7.9 million. He found no personal corruption. He found a City Hall that lost track of your money. The 2024 cyberattack then cost $18.3 million to recover, and the insurance claim was denied.

Why People Who Have Done the Job Are Backing This Campaign

Doug Conley held this seat. Bob Bratina ran the city. Paul Miller represented Stoney Creek at Queen’s Park. Ken Hewitt ran a municipality for three terms. Here is why they are with us.

A Stolen Sign Does Not Change a Vote

In one week, about 250 of our lawn signs disappeared from Ward 9 lawns. Here is what we are doing about it, and why it does not matter nearly as much as the person who put the sign up.

City Services

Accountability

What You Heard at the Ward 9 Debate

On September 22, Cable 14 put the Ward 9 candidates on one stage. Here is what was said, what was confirmed on air, and what it means for your tax bill.

How to Vote

Thank You for Voting Early

Two advance weekends down, one to go. To everyone who has already voted at Valley Park, thank you. Here is what happens next.

No to GFL 2.0

Stop the AI data centre

There is a proposal for a large AI data centre in our area. We have lived through what happens when a heavy industrial neighbour arrives without answers, and I oppose it. Before anyone signs anything, Ward 9 deserves the full picture on the record: what it means for our power, our water, our air, and our streets. We were promised answers on the landfill once too. Not again.

Community

Bring back the fireworks

Ask anyone who grew up here about Canada Day and they will mention the fireworks at Valley Park. Families on blankets, kids with glow sticks, neighbours together under the same sky. Somewhere along the way we lost that, and I want to bring it back. When families gather close to home, kids make memories here, local businesses see the traffic, and seniors have somewhere to go. A community that celebrates together looks out for each other all year.

Safety

Smarter coyote safety

Across Upper Stoney Creek, residents are reporting more coyote encounters near trails, parks, and playgrounds. For too long, families have been left to manage it with homemade signs and social media warnings. Cities like Burlington, Mississauga, and Toronto show a better way. I will advocate for a Hamilton Coyote Response Strategy: a public sightings map, stronger enforcement of wildlife-feeding bylaws, free yard audits to remove attractants, and better coordination with our conservation partners.

Reliable Roads

Real GO service for Stoney Creek

Confederation GO opened right here, and that is a start. But a station is only as good as the service that runs through it. I will push for two-way, all-day express GO service at Confederation, so people in Stoney Creek can get to Toronto and back without planning their whole day around a train schedule.

Reliable Roads

Fix our roads and potholes

The everyday streets and sidewalks we use to get to work, school, and the grocery store should be kept in good repair, not left to crumble and patched a year too late. Rebuild, repave, repaint. The savings from uploading the LINC and Red Hill to the Province go straight back into the local roads you drive every day.

Reliable Roads

Widen Rymal Road

Rymal Road comes up often at the door, and for good reason. The widening there is overdue. I will press to get it moving so one of Ward 9’s busiest corridors can finally carry the traffic it already has.

Reliable Roads

An honest take on the LRT

My first choice is clear: I would rather see the LRT funding go into better GO service across Hamilton than into building the LRT. That is the investment that moves the most people, the fastest. But if the LRT is going to proceed, it has to be done right, and right now the design connects to none of Hamilton’s three GO stations. If it moves ahead, it must link up with the GO network we already have.

Community

Protect the downtown Stoney Creek parking lot

I stand with the community against the plan to develop the downtown parking lot. Seniors, people with disabilities, and the customers our small businesses depend on all rely on it. I am for affordable housing, just not at the cost of the accessibility and local economy downtown was built on. I am happy to help find a better site for these homes, in Upper Stoney Creek or elsewhere in Hamilton.

On Crime & Our Youth

Enforcement Deals With Crime Today. Investing in Youth Prevents Tomorrow's.

Residents want to feel safe again, and they want their kids growing up away from violence, not around it. Ward 9 needs both enforcement and prevention.

On the LINC & Red Hill

Hamilton Taxpayers Are Paying for a Provincial Highway

On Traffic Safety

On E-Scooters

A Child Should Not Be Doing Highway Speeds on a Scooter

To Rural Upper Stoney Creek

How and Where Ward 9 Votes: Your Complete Guide

Everything this campaign has talked about comes down to what happens in one small booth. Here is everything you need to cast your ballot.

Meet Jonathan

Lifelong resident. Real experience. Ready to serve.

Jonathan Stathakos, Ward 9 Councillor

I am a lifelong resident of Upper Stoney Creek. I know these streets, and I know the families who call them home.

For years I have worked in and around government, and I have seen the difference between a City Hall that delivers and one that has stopped. Taxes keep climbing. Streets feel less safe. Roads we all pay for sit in limbo. The odour from the landfill still rolls in on summer nights.

None of this has to be permanent. Our community is worth fixing, and the fixes are real. I am running to bring the plan and the experience to get Ward 9 back on track.

My Story

The Experience to Deliver for Ward 9.

I am a Senior Public Sector Advisor and a former Chief of Staff to a Member of Parliament. For years I have worked inside government at multiple levels, in economic development, post-secondary education, and the transportation sectors. I hold a BA from McMaster University and a Master’s from Ryerson University, and I am a small business owner. I have lived in Upper Stoney Creek my entire life. I know how City Hall works, and I know what this community needs from it.

A record, not just a resume

Education

I earned my BA at McMaster University and my Master’s at Ryerson University. My thesis evaluated Document 19, the 1982 policy that set the limits of religious tolerance in China, and what happens to a society when freedom of belief is only partly allowed. While at Ryerson I worked as a Teaching Assistant and was a proud CUPE member, an experience that shaped how I see work: the people doing the job deserve a real voice, fair treatment, and respect.

Where I come from

I was raised by a single mother on ODSP. I know what it means when the rent is due, the bills do not wait, and there is nothing left at the end of the month. That is not a talking point for me. It is how I grew up. It taught me to respect every dollar, to solve problems instead of waiting for someone else to, and to notice the people who get left behind when the basics stop working.

This community gave me the chance to build a life anyway. Good schools, safe streets, neighbours who looked out for each other. I want every family in Ward 9 to have that same chance. I did not move here for the campaign. This is home, and it always has been.

Why I am running

I have watched taxes climb more than 20 percent since 2022. I have heard neighbours on my own street say they no longer feel safe. I have sat with families who close their windows in July because of the landfill. None of this has to be permanent. The fixes are real, and I have the plan and the experience to deliver them.

I am not running for a title. I am running because this is my home, these are my neighbours, and I know we can do better. Because better is possible.
